Fun with Kids

Games of Summer

August 28, 2018

On the Fourth of July, I took a walk down the crowded beach and saw so many new fun summer activities and games being played.  I literally stopped and talked to group after group of people asking them to tell me about their games and how to play.  So much fun!  Some you can make yourself and others you can buy.  Fun for all ages.  Fun with kids.  Fun with beverages.  Easy to assemble, pack and carry.

So there the classics:

  • Frizbee
  • Bocce Ball
  • Paddle Ball
  • Cornhole (AKA: Bags)
  • Volleyball
  • Hacky Sack

But what about the trendy new outdoor games we are seeing this summer on beaches, backyards, pools and parks everywhere?

Some are newer than others but here are a few:  See photos, descriptions, and links to where you can purchase.  Just to be clear I am not an affiliate and do not get paid/commissions for any purchases you make.  Not my style.  Just throwin the info out there for ya.

Beach Pong (AKA: Bucket Ball)

Exactly what it sounds like.  You can buy a set or you can head down to your dollar store and simply buy 12 sand pails and tennis balls.  Cheap and easy.

Ladder Ball

Space the game ladders about 15 feet apart and start tossing your bolas. Each player tosses all 3 bolas, then the next player tosses all 3 bolas. The first one to 21 without going over is the winner! The top rung is worth 3 points, middle is 2 and bottom rung is 1 point.

Spike Ball

“When volleball and foursquare have a baby”

As seen on Shark Tank.  A player starts a point by serving the ball down onto the Spikeball net so it ricochets up at his opponents. They have up to 3 hits between them (think bump, set, spike) to control the ball and bounce it back off the net.

KanJam

KanJam is a flying disc game, played with a flying disc and two cans in which you deflect the disc onto the can/into the can slot/top.

Bulzi Bucket

Players alternate throwing until all 4 bags are thrown.  Each tear is worth a different point value.  NOTE: BAG WITH GREEN DOT IS WORTH DOUBLE POINTS, aka the “Bulzi Bag” or “Money Bag”.

I cannot decide which game/s I want to get first!  They all look so fun!  Beach Pong, Ladder Ball, and Bulzi Bucket sound like they might be a best fit for my family.  Remember my kids are 6 and 3 years old.  The rules are simple and the games don’t take too much skill – great for little kids and yet still fun for adults.  The other games need a bit more concentration and coordination.

What are your favorite outdoor games?  Have you played any of these?  What do you think?  Drop us some comments with your reviews!  Or maybe you play a game that I did not mention – do tell!

Labor Day is fast approaching so you still have time to buy/make these games before the end of summer festivities.  GAME ON!
